Results
The competition was held on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at The University of Arizona campus. Opening ceremony began with a motivational welcome by the Honorable Councilman Rodney Glassman. Over 160 students, parents, teachers, administrators, judges, community leaders, and college students were present for this event. Teams presented their analysis of the case and featured their solutions in a multimedia presentation which was evaluated by a panel of 16 judges with professional experience in personal finance including UBS International, Tucson Federal Credit Union, and United Way.
Additional student evaluation results showed:
· 94% would start saving for college or post-high school training
· 97% feel that they are better able to understand how to manage their own finances as a result of this case competition
· One student said, “I feel this is great to show that life can have problems and this teaches us how to solve them. One word… FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).”
· Another student said, “I believe that once you learn something then see examples of how to use the info you can have a clear understanding of the material.”
Over 200 students were educated this year; over 160 students, teachers, parents, and administrators attended the case-study competition day. Cumulatively, Jr. Duel has impacted over 1,400 students from 13 different middle and high schools in the Tucson community.
Recognition
Winning schools received a cash award provided by Hughes Federal Credit Union. Below is the breakdown of the results.
